Effects of Unfairly Unfavorable Book Reviews on Independent Authors - James M. Lowrance Even the title of this boggles my mind, it might actually be longer than the ebook itself. An ebook about "unfair" negative reviews? Really? The synopsis contradicts itself, which makes the entire thing hypocritical.Example 1:"While these methods can work well, as long as reviewers are being completely honest with their reviews, bookseller websites should also make sure that they have adequate moderation in place for review-submissions and they should screen out those that meet the definition for containing attack or spam elements within them and those that simply go overboard in the negative direction."One paragraph later - "Again, I am not advocating the censorship of negative reviews that are deserved but against those that are obviously not deserved."Uh, you just did say that bookseller websites should "moderate" reviews that are just too mean. That is called....censoring.Example 2: "This type of contrast proves that reviews are not always a matter of fact but also a matter of taste. A negative perception of a written work can be held by only a small percent of readers, while a positive perception by the majority and vice versa. " Yes and that is called an opinion...and no, you can't censor out the negative ones."The problem for books that are truly worthwhile and worth the price they are listed for, is that an undeserved negative review can often be the first one that appears on a book published by an indie author."And since it was so eloquently put that it's a matter of "taste", then that is not the problem of the reviewer is it?Example 3: "Any books or ebooks that are worthy of highly unfavorable reviews that are fairly written, should never have been approved for listing by reputable booksellers to begin with and by allowing these on their websites, they are in essence admitting to approving trash-titles for sale."Right, and who is checking all the books to make sure they don't suck? No one! But it's a matter of taste isn't it? So, then there isn't such a thing as a "trash title", right?"This is the reason stricter guidelines for reviews should be in place, to prevent improper perceptions from being formed by the book shopping public, toward reputable booksellers and toward the independent authors and publishers they represent."Oh, I see, we're going to censor reviews so that booksellers get a better reputation for not putting out crappy books.I can't even follow the logic in the synopsis. I don't even want to consider trying to unravel the logic in the whole thing. Perhaps this book puts forth the theory that readers are just too stupid to look through reviews and determine which ones are assessments they agree with? I dunno.
